Finite Element Analysis on Nitinol Medical Applications

چکیده
This article presents two applications of the nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) using ABAQUS/Standard with a user developed material subroutine Nitinol UMAT from Abaqus West. The analyses are found to agree well with the theoretical prediction and/or experimental measurement. In that first example, FEA predicts the stress-strain response of a superelastic Nitinol device at different Af temperatures when tested at 37°C. The second example confirms the FEA prediction of the forcedisplacement relationship of a diamond-shaped fatigue specimen. The focus of this presentation is on the use of FEA as a predictive design tool for fast prototyping of Nitinol medical devices.

Finite Element Analysis and Experimental Evaluation of Superelastic Nitinol Stent
The mechanical properties of Nitinol stents are normally evaluated experimentally due to complexities resulting from large deformations and material nonlinearity. Despite the difficulties associated with Finite Element Analysis (FEA), the success of the computational analysis in combination with experimental study leads to better understanding of stent performance. This paper presents compariso...
متن کاملOn the experimental testing of fine Nitinol wires for medical devices.
Nitinol, a nickel titanium alloy, is widely used as a biocompatible metal with applications in high strain medical devices. The alloy exhibits both superelasticity and thermal shape memory behaviour. Basic mechanical properties can be established and are provided by suppliers; however the true stress-strain response under repeated load is not fully understood. It is essential to know this behav...

Femoral artery; Nitinol stent; Material properties; Mechanical performance; Finite element analysis. Abstract The Finite element method was used for evaluation of the effects of material properties on the mechanical performance of the new geometry designed for the Z-shaped open-cell femoral artery selfexpanding stent, made of Nitinol wire, by application of crushing force. The behavior of the s...
متن کاملSuperelastic leg design optimization for an endoscopic capsule with active locomotion
Nowadays Nitinol structures are accepted and highly exploited in the medical field. Therefore, studying the mechanical properties of this material—which is not trivial by considering the thermal behaviour of the alloy—is very important in order to get quantitative data for a reliable design of novel Nitinol components. In particular, this study focuses on the design optimization of superelastic...
متن کاملExperimental and 3D Finite Element Analysis of a Slotless Air-Cored Axial Flux PMSG for Wind Turbine Application
In this research paper, the performance of an air-cored axial flux permanent magnet synchronous generator is evaluated for low speed, direct drive applications using 3D finite element modeling and experimental tests. The structure of the considered machine consists of double rotor and coreless stator, which results in the absence of core losses, reduction of stator weight and elimination of cog...
